Title: Star Fox Assault
Platform: Gamecube
Publisher: Nintendo
Review written by: Gamer122 (Steph)
Difficulty: Medium
Back in the day, gamers fell in love with Rare’s space shooter, Star Fox 64. Then Rare tried a new Star Fox idea which a few people liked. Now that Rare left Nintendo, where does that leave the beloved Star Fox team? Namco bought rights to the series. Namco to the rescue! Maybe…
Story line- Fox McCloud and the rest of the Star Fox team (Krystal, Falco, Peppy, Rob, and Slippy) have been called in to destroy what is left of Andross’s team. The leader is Andrew Oikonny (from the Star Wolf team). The Star Fox team chases him down but then is attacked by a new enemy called aparoid . The team then becomes too busy finding more out about the than worrying Oikonny. The team than accidentally releases Pigma who steals the core memory which is needed to study the aparoids. It is up to the team to find Pigma and figure a way to save the Lylat system.
Graphics- The game’s not gorgeous but it’s not ugly. It’s very pretty! The space environments are well-done. The characters aren’t as detailed as I hoped but they still look good However the character movement looked stiff in on-foot missions.
Sound- The audio to the game is good. Each level has it’s own tune for you to listen to while flying, running, and shooting around. However, the music can get on your nerves if you have played a level over and over again. Namco has captured the Star Fox theme. Fans of the series will be happy with it.
Gameplay- Imagine taking the Star Fox 64 control scheme and putting it on the GameCube controller. On foot, the controls feel too sensitive. Often you will change weapons by mistake because you barley tap the button. Not only that but the controls feel clunky. Everything is set on path or in a small area. You will feel enclosed and Especially during the on-foot missions. The camera feels frozen in one position which isn’t good because it’s hard to see what is rolling down the hill that you’re trying to climb up. Which leads to the lack of new gameplay. Just about everything in Assault we’ve seen in other Star Fox games but that’s ok. There are also three different difficulties. (Bronze=easy, Silver=medium, Gold=hard)
Replay Value- Medium Level. Assault offers multi-player. You can pick one out of six arenas where you and up to three other friends can battle each other or play on teams and then battle the other team. Blasters, Arwings, and Landmasters are used during multi-player. You can pick to be either Fox, Falco, Slippy, or Krystal. However you can unlock new characters. There is a mini-game called Xevious. Plus the different difficulty levels gives you a reason to come for more; but once you beat it…you beat it.
Innovation- Assault doesn’t offer anything new to the table of gaming. Everything has been done in other Star Fox titles or in other games.
The Good- Assault is a fun game that feels very much like an updated Sat Fox 64 which is okay. The mutli-player adds a few hours onto the game time alogn with the mini-game.
The Bad- Character A.I is lacking. The other members don’t feel very helpful and the enemies at times…seem to lack brains. Also the characters talk during battle. They lean out some important information that will help you but their voices are drowned out by the sound effects and you will be too busy watching were you are going to read the captions. Plus there isn’t a co-ops mode which is very disappointing.
All in all the game is far from being bad but it isn’t worth the fifty bucks. You’re best bet would be to wait for the Arwing to land on Planet Bargain Bin or Planet Used-Games. It’s defiantly a rental and one to pick up if you’re a Star Fox fan.
Overall, I give this game an 8.5...out of 10.
