Review written by: Gamer122 (Steph)
Ah, the good old N64 days. We all loved our N64s and now we can relive some of our old favorites! One of Nintendo’s launch title for their new handheld, the Nintendo DS, is Super Mario 64 DS which is a remake of the good ol’ game!
Story line-
Mario, Luigi, and Wario are on their way to visit Princess Peach’s castle when they are kidnapped along with Princess Peach. It’s up to Yoshi to save them. While doing so, you discover that no other than Browser is behind all the trouble. Can Yoshi find and team up with the others to defeat Browser?
Graphics-
The graphics resemble the N64 version. It’s not completely in 3D but isn‘t bad. Things seem a bit squared off and some objects like trees are in 2D. The environments themselves are colorful and bright which is expected of a Mario title. The characters are detailed in their own little way. They move smoothly around the areas. Nothing is very detailed but nothing lacks detail. The graphics are middle of the road. They are very decent for a handheld and show what the DS can do.
Sound-
The sound is good and solid. You can hear birds singing, waterfalls roaring, and insects buzzing in the background. You can hear a slight difference in the character’s footsteps as they move from a hard surface to a carpet to dirt. The music is decent and enjoy about but the same tunes are used through different levels in the game. There are no voiceovers. Character’s have cries and grunts but that’s about it. Talking to other characters means reading a text screen.
Gameplay-
There are three modes in which to play SM64DS. The Standard Mode allows you to either use the D-pad or touch screen to move while the Y,X,A, and B button function as your action buttons (for running, jumping, punching, and zooming the camera in); and the L and R buttons center the camera and make you character crouch. Also the touch screen allows you to move the camera around.
The next mode is the Touch Mode. In this mode, you use the touch screen to move your character while the Y,X,A, and B buttons move the camera left or right, attack, and jump. The L and R buttons are still used to center the camera and to crouch.
The final mode is the Dual-Hand Mode. You use the touch screen to move around and to rotate the camera. Then both the D-pad and the Y,X,A, and B buttons function as all of your actions (jumping, crouching, center camera, and attack). This mode allows left handed gamers and easy way to play. However, the camera is sometimes against you which makes it had for you to see where you are and what you are going.
Innovation-
The two screens are innovating without a doubt. The bottom screen is used to move the character around and is a mini map. The two screens work together for the mini-games. For example, enemies might be falling down on you from the top screen and you use the touch screen to pull down a slingshot. Once you let go, the ball will fly up onto the top screen and knock the enemies down.
Replay Value-
High. With a large amount of mini games to unlock and plenty of stars laying around, you will be back. Plus there is multi-player.
The Good- SM64DS is a very good remake. There are some new things added but it still has the classic SM64 feel.
The Bad- The multi-player is a disappointment since there are only three areas and one mode. Plus only four people can play at once. The only mode is a collect the most stars before everyone game. You simple try to collect the most number of stars out of a total of five and try to hold on to them till time runs out. Fun but only for awhile.
Even though this is a remake, it’s fun and is a good title to have for your DS collection. Mario fans will be pleased with this addicting title. Overall, I give this game an 8.5...out of 10.
