In the late 80s, a revolutionary game called Metroid came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It was no ordinary side-scroller, it was an actual free roaming environment. 2004, Metroid Zero Mission is released. It is a remake of this revolutionary game. Does it live up to the original? In a word, YES.
I think we all know that the GBA isn't really capable of doing 3d graphics. This being said, this is some of the best 2d graphics i've seen on the GBA. Everything in the environment is highly detailed, the enemies are detailed, Samus herself, even looks really good. Even the menu screens look good. They took the same style of Metroid Prime for the menus. Everything about this game's graphics and attention to detail is just great.
The gameplay is truly awesome. It is a perfect blend of action and platforming. The weapons are all cool and the jumping puzzles are sweet. Enemies range from easy little critters, to the very tough Space Pirates. The bosses are some of the coolest 2d bosses ever, with bosses like Ridley and Kraid, you can't go wrong. Now, there is A LOT of hidden items. I got a lot, and still only had 46% of the stuff when i beat the game. This, in return, will keep you coming back for more, if only to explore the planet of Zebes. There is actually a map this time around, which wasn't there in the original, and Save Rooms, also not in the original. These aren't necessarily essential to your progress though, because if you know where to go, you can fully beat the game in about 3-4 hours. There are 3 difficulty modes, which will keep you coming back, and the game is just so fun, it's very hard to put down. Now, one potential problem with the game, is it is a hard game. Not too hard though, it makes the game more fun because of the perfect level of difficulty. It never gets frustrating.
There is really, nothing bad at all i can say about the music in this game. It sounds so good, sometimes i found myself just stopping and listening to the music, before i continue on. It basically takes the original Metroid music, but makes it 10 times better sounding. All the weapon sounds are great and the other sound effects are sweet. Literally, nothing in this game sounds bad.
The story is the only real downfall of this game. Although, it doesn't fall very far. Samus Aran, an orphan of the Chozo people, is a bounty hunter, sent to Planet Zebes to exterminate all Metroid life forms on the planet, and the ultimate goal, to defeat the mechanical life-form, Mother Brain. How will she do this? She will find all types of cool power ups and weapons for her fancy suit, that's how!
There are some truly awesome extra features in this game, such as unlocking the whole original Metroid after you beat the game. You can also unlock and art gallery and stuff, so the extra features are really cool.
This is one of my favorite games for the Game Boy Advance. It is a GREAT remake and should definitely be looked into and bought if you haven't already.
GOOD+ all of the gameplay and bosses, graphics, and audio.
BAD- not really much, but the game is pretty short, and it can be frustrating trying to find everything.
Overall, I give Metroid Zero Mission a 9.5...out of 10.
